Lessons in Leadership and Growth: A Conversation with Vincent Siu
This is my third podcast episode, following an inspiring conversation with Till Kraemer on cultural diversity. This time, I had the privilege of sitting down with Vincent Siu, the founder of Press Start Studios, a gamification company in Hong Kong. Vincent’s entrepreneurial journey is nothing short of remarkable—starting his first business at the age of 16 by teaching a class of students who were almost his peers.
Our conversation was packed with insights, but here are some of the standout lessons Vincent shared:
1. Start Small, Take Action, and Learn Along the Way
“You don’t need to go full-time when you’re just starting out,” Vincent emphasized. He built his business gradually, dedicating weekends to test ideas and refine his vision. Starting small and learning as you go allows you to experiment without overwhelming yourself.
2. Follow Your Passion—Even When It’s Not the Easy Path
After college, Vincent could have pursued a lucrative career in banking or consulting. Instead, he chose to follow his dream of building something meaningful—despite the many obstacles and uncertainties along the way. His journey is a powerful reminder that passion and persistence can out beat short-term rewards.
3. Make Learning Fun and Feedback-Driven
Vincent’s approach to gamification is simple yet profound: make learning enjoyable. At its core, effective learning happens when participants are engaged and motivated. But it doesn’t stop there—providing consistent feedback is key to driving improvement and growth throughout the process.
4. Have a Clear Vision for Success
Success isn’t just about using the latest tools; it’s about defining clear objectives and focusing on what truly matters: the values and benefits your audience (or students) will gain. Vincent’s philosophy is a great reminder to always start with the “why” before diving into the “how.”
5. Leadership Is a Skill You Can Build
When asked about leadership, Vincent shared this gem: “Be good at what you do and practice what you preach.” Leadership isn’t something you’re born with—it’s a skill that grows with consistent effort, just like a muscle.
6. Seek Inspiration from Role Models
Mentorship doesn’t always have to be formal. Vincent shared how observing successful people and adopting habits that resonate with your goals can be just as powerful as having a mentor.
7. Develop a Thick Skin and Embrace the Journey
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint-hearted. Vincent was candid about the challenges—it’s a lonely journey at times, and setbacks are inevitable. But with resilience, self-honesty, and a willingness to embrace the tough times, success becomes a possibility.
